NORMAN EMOTIONS
DUCAL OF CORIGLIANO CASTLE

The Ducale di Corigliano Castle, among the most beautiful and best conserved in the whole Southern part of Italy, surely must have been part of the defensive line of the Norman leader Roberto, the Guiscardo, made between 1064 and 1080 in the Crate Valley, to control and lay siege to the cities and territories intolerant to his yoke: among these cities the close Rossano bizantina.

The first castellan was the vassal of Guiscardo, a certain Framundo, coming from Losdum in France. It is due to Roberto Sanseverino IV, count of Corigliano from 1339 to 1361, the first adjustments made, on one side to adapt part of the castle as a noble residence and on the other side, to give the building the typical fortified architecture of the Angevins time.

According to the local traditions, Carlo D’Angio was born in 1354 and in 1381 became King of Naples with the name of Carlo III.
From 1487 to 1495, the castle was under national administration becoming the headquarters of the military garrison. During this time, which lasted eight years, the castle was refurbished by royal commission.

The intervention is evident on the low round corner tower (today the Mastio) with square base and cylindrical towers at the peaks, placed according to the cardinal points. It is most likely that the Aragonese “restorer” was Antonio Marchesi from Settignano, student of the grand Francesco di Giorgio Martini, military architect of the King of Naples and none in courts of all Europe. From 1616 to 1649, the Ducale castle from Sansaverino to Saluzzo, rich Genovese entrepreneurs that operated even in Naples. At the end of this interesting visit, a tasting session at the farm.
