PATHIRION ABBEY
ROSSAN CALABRO BETWEEN HISTORY AND NATURE

At six hundred meters of altitude, in perfect mystic solitude, arises the ancient Basilicata abbey of Saint Mary of Patir, also known as Pathirion. Other than being a place of worship, the monastery was an important center where matchless copyists and miniaturist of sacred texts worked. It was the same Virgin to wish that the abbey be erected there: she appeared to San Bartolomeu from Simari, who immediately after the year 1000 followed a hermit living in those mountains, and asked him to build a monastery dedicated to her. San Bartolomeu obeyed and committed to the construction under the illuminated guide of the Holy Mother, who from the start wanted it to be a place of prayer and meditation.

Visit to the Abbey that has a Latin-Norman Basilicata plant with three apses facing East.

Towards the end, the visit continues at the natural oasis of Giganti di Cozzo del Pesco at 1183 meters above sea level. There are 102 majestic, monumental chestnut trees: Chestnut No. 8 has a diameter at the base of 9,12 m and Chestnut No. 64 is 12,81 m at the base. Finally, tasting of local Calabrian products at the farm.
